As is the case with every group of ERF conference organizers,
we have taken ERF's familiar and successful conference format
and modified it to accommodate some new twists. Below are a number
of the new features that will be highlights of this conference:
1. Posters given prime space and time AND more awards for
students
Posters will be given prime space and scheduled during daytime
hours. To accommodate all of the excellent abstracts that we expect
to receive, the majority of papers will be assigned to posters.
To provide additional recognition for excellent poster presentations
from graduate students, the ERF Governing Board has accepted our
recommendation to increase the number of graduate student awards
for "outstanding" presentations in the poster session.
The Board increased the amount of money that will be given as
awards to student poster presentations by $1,000 for this conference.
2. Broadened scope of invited sessions
Invited sessions will also be popular features of the conference
program. To broaden the diversity of scientific and management
topics, the steering committee requested proposals for these sessions
last year. We have approved proposals for 28 invited special sessions.
We also asked session organizers to include graduate students
among the invited speakers and we expect good student representation
in these sessions.
3. Interactive poster sessions
In addition to our typical poster, workshop and oral sessions,
we will host "interactive poster sessions" for some
invited sessions. These sessions will be held in rooms capable
of holding 50-70 people. In the interactive poster sessions, persons
presenting posters will present their work and will be able to
interact with other presenters. Audience participation will be
encouraged.
4. Two allied conferences will join ERF 2001 at St. Pete Beach
Two closely related conferences are being held in conjunction
with the ERF 2001 conference: the 7th Estuarine and Coastal Modeling
Conference and the AMS Fourth Conference on Coastal Atmospheric
and Oceanic Prediction and Processes. These conferences will be
located at the Tradewinds Sirata Conference Center, a short walk
south of the Tradewinds Island Grande, which is the headquarters
for ERF 2001.
The ECM7 conference will run from Monday through Wednesday and
the AMS conference will run from Wednesday through Friday (with
the Coastal Data Exchange Workshop on Tuesday). The ECM7 conference
is chaired by Alan Blumberg and Malcolm Spaulding. For more information,
please visit www.oce.uri.edu/ecm7.
The AMS conference is chaired by Frank Aikman and Rich Hodur,
more information on this conference may be found at www.ametsoc.org/AMS
There will be a single all-day joint session Wednesday, November
7th, entitled "Estuarine and Coastal Ocean Forecasting."
This session will be convened jointly by AMS, ECM and ERF, and
will be held at the Sirata Conference Center. If you wish to submit
an abstract for this jointly convened session through your ERF
abstract submission, please specify "ECM-AMS" in the
topic line of the submission form.
Other ERF 2001, ECM7, and AMS sessions may be designated as joint
sessions as the program comes together. All three conferences
will honor each other's registration badges for attendance in
the scientific sessions.
There also will be a joint luncheon on Wednesday, with Dr. Richard
W. Spinrad, Technical Director, Office of the Oceanographer of
the Navy, as guest speaker. This will be a ticketed event and
must be purchased with your registration.
