Summer Job Opportunity: Nature Counselor at a Beach Community

June 25 - August 24, 2008

A small private family community located on the south shore of Long Island needs a counselor for our summer camp program. We are looking for someone interested in elementary education with an environmental emphasis. The candidate should be an upper division student or recent college graduate with some teaching experience (or a teacher interested in spending the summer at the beach!). A background in ecology is desirable, especially an interest in the marine environment and barrier beaches.

Camp runs from June 30 through August 24, although it would be necessary to arrive by June 25 to get situated and plan activities. Pay is modest, but full room and board are provided. Work commitment is about five hours per weekday, plus occasional evenings and some Saturday mornings. Kids in camp age from 5-12 years, divided into age groups. Nature activities for each group are interspersed with sailing, tennis, arts & crafts, and sports.

Our emphasis in this recreational program is to have fun while learning about the environment. Activities include: beach seining for living sea creatures, maintenance of marine aquaria and terraria in a small community Nature Center, nature walks, games and reading. You will work with two marine science professors who are homeowners in the community.
