The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is a regional agency of the state of Florida, and is charged with managing and protecting water resources of the region by balancing and improving water quality, flood control, natural systems and water supply. SFWMD's boundaries extend from central Florida to Lake Okeechobee, and from coast to coast, from Fort Myers to Fort Pierce, south through the sprawling Everglades to the Florida Keys and Florida Bay. The Coastal Ecosystems Division (CED) at the South Florida Water Management District seeks a quantitative estuarine ecologist with expertise in estuarine ecological modeling. The CED uses an integrated modeling approach to improve predictability of the responses of coastal ecosystems to freshwater inflow and nutrient loading from the watershed. Individuals with expertise and experience in quantitative analysis and modeling of seagrass or oyster populations/communities are encouraged to apply. Major duties include developing and applying predictive numerical population/community level models and managing related projects, interacting with engineers, modelers, and other scientists to help solve complex coastal resource management problems and establishing and maintaining communications with internal and external customers regarding coastal research results and scientific needs. The successful candidate will have knowledge of the theories, principles, and methods of coastal ecosystems related to ecological modeling, the ability to conduct applied research and have effective verbal and written communication. Other desirable skills include programming, statistical analyses, and GIS applications. MS (Ph.D. preferred) in Marine/Estuarine Ecology, Environmental Sciences or a related discipline with at least six (6) years of qualifying experience in estuarine ecology and modeling. Experience in subtropical estuarine systems is a plus. Valid Florida driver's license required. For more information or to apply, please visit sfwmd.gov and reference job NB50081574. EOE.
