Lab Manager/Scientific Diver Position

Title: Research Assistant
Start Date: Immediately
Location: University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland

Principle Duties: The primary responsibilities of this position are to assist in field collection and to organize and maintain data collected for use in oyster restoration in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay. The person who fills this position will need to be detail-oriented with strong organizational and people management skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MS in Marine Science, Biology, Wildlife and Fisheries Biology, Fisheries Conservation or related discipline
  • Ability to accurately collect, record, maintain, and analyze data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Strong writing skills including the ability to synthesize data and write clear reports for a variety of audiences (e.g. academics, resource managers, the public).
  • Certified SCUBA diver capable of and willing to earn AAUS Scientific Diver Certification
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Must demonstrate practical understanding and working knowledge of scientific empirical procedures
  • Must be able to lift medium-weight objects (~50-60 lbs).
  • Must have the patience, understanding, flexibility, and energy to work in a dynamic lab/field situation with flexible hours
  • Must be willing to sacrifice, adapt, and work hard as part of a team pursuing a common goal and objective.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AAUS Scientific Diver Certification
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Access and ArcGIS software
  • Experience working on oyster reef ecology and/or on oyster disease dynamics
  • Experience operating boats in marine or estuarine waters
  • USCG Captain's license or willingness to obtain one

Salary: $35,000 - $40,000, depending upon experience
