$4,237 - $5,557 per month (Natural Resource Scientist 3)

The Washington State Department of Ecology is seeking a senior oceanographer/estuarine scientist to be the science lead for our marine monitoring program. Ecology is responsible for monitoring and assessing the marine waters of the state including Puget Sound and the coastal estuaries. This position will be assigned several areas of responsibility:
1. Develop Ecology's long-term monitoring plan seeking interaction with internal and external stakeholders, help determine special project oceanographic monitoring strategies, analyze data, and produce scientific reports and technical publications, particularly on environmental indicators for water quality assessments.
2. Represent the Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) on marine science/policy issues as needed; advise management on marine issues affecting agency decisions and policy; represent EAP on committees and workgroups; facilitate interagency coordination of monitoring, modeling, and research; form collaborative partnerships to enhance marine monitoring and modeling capabilities.
3. Serve as principal investigator for scientific grants; track funding opportunities; draft grant applications; manage grants including negotiating, writing, tracking and documenting grant requirements.
4. Support ongoing monitoring efforts including potential involvement in all aspects of data collection, processing, and analysis.
5. Give presentations at conferences, workshops and other events related to Ecology's marine water monitoring program.

Well qualified applicants will have:

  • A Ph.D. in Oceanography or Marine Science.
  • At least four years of oceanographic project management experience related to estuarine processes, preferably in Puget Sound.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a vigorous program of oceanic and estuarine assessment.
  • A broad range of interdisciplinary experience including data analysis, statistical interpretation, and published scientific reports.
  • Seagoing experience on vessels using Sea-Bird CTDs, probes/sensors, and Niskin bottles.
  • Database management skills using Microsoft Access.
  • Familiarity with Clean Water Act regulations and Washington State's Water Quality standards.
  • Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated by publication. Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with others across the organization; good team-playing skills, including diligence, creativity, and a healthy sense of humor.
