The University of Connecticut, Avery Point campus seeks a coastal marine scientist for a tenure track position as Associate Professor/Coordinator of the Coastal Studies undergraduate major. Research and teaching needs in the department favor a candidate specializing in interdisciplinary coastal ecology, in particular someone with demonstrated expertise in inputs and cycles of nutrients, pollutants, or other materials in coastal waters, and human impacts on coastal ecosystems. As Coordinator, the successful candidate will oversee the Coastal Studies major. This innovative interdisciplinary major is strongly grounded in experiential learning and combines courses in coastal marine sciences (biological, chemical, geological, and physical oceanography) with ones that are focused on the human dimensions of coastal problems (environmental law, natural resource management, resource economics). Specific responsibilities as Coordinator include: continuing development of the curriculum, assuring effective faculty advisement, coordinating course offerings, and overseeing activities aimed at recruitment and retention. The Coordinator is also expected to consult with the campus Associate Vice Provost and Director of Academic Services regarding the scheduling and staffing of Coastal Studies courses. Tenure track faculty are 9 month appointments; however, the Coordinator position is a 10 month appointment with an initial 5-year term. As a faculty member in the Department of Marine Sciences, the successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in support of the major, establish an extramurally-funded research program, and advise graduate students. A PhD in Oceanography, Marine Sciences or related discipline is required. A record of achievement demonstrating strong commitment to quality undergraduate education is essential.
