The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is a regional agency of the state of Florida, and is charged with managing and protecting water resources of the region by balancing and improving water quality, flood control, natural systems and water supply. SFWMD's boundaries extend from central Florida to Lake Okeechobee, and from coast to coast, from Fort Myers to Fort Pierce, south through the sprawling Everglades to the Florida Keys and Florida Bay. The Everglades Division seeks a plant ecologist, with an emphasis on below ground processes, to conduct research in support of Everglades restoration and effective water management. The primary responsibility of this position is to examine the connections between below ground nutrient dynamics, primary productivity, and marsh community dynamics, as a function of hydrology, watershed characteristics, and restoration plans. The successful candidate will be an integral member of a multi-disciplinary project examining the restoration of nutrient enriched areas of the Everglades, the Cattail Habitat Improvement Project (CHIP). The CHIP project is a landscape-scale adaptive management experiment to restore ridge-slough functionality, trophic dynamics, and wildlife diversity and abundance. For project details see my.sfwmd.gov/evergladeswatershed. The candidate will also have opportunities to conduct research examining plant community responses to altered hydrology throughout the Everglades landscape. Must possess a MS in a natural science discipline with at least six (6) years of experience. PhD with post doc experience preferred. Specific area of expertise can be in wetland/salt marsh ecology, rhizosphere dynamics, or community ecology. Strong statistical, computational, written and verbal communication skills are essential.
