Winter 2005 Newsletter
As most of you are aware, Hurricane Ivan wreaked incredible havoc on Pensacola just two weeks before our joint meeting with Society of Wetland Scientists South Central and South Atlantic Chapters was set to begin there. With each succeeding report from the local organizers, rescheduling receded further and further, until finally, late in November, a firm new date was set and a new venue found.
The new home for our conference "Communication and Collaboration: Coastal Systems of the Gulf of Mexico and the Southeastern United States" will be the Hilton Garden Inn and Conference Center on Pensacola Beach from 30 March to 2 April 2005. Special sessions on seagrasses and habitat alteration are planned. The seagrass session will take advantage of bringing together so many researchers and managers by concluding with an interactive session to identify and prioritize research and needs.
The forced move may be fortuitous in one regard. Early registration was so successful that our meeting may have pushed the limits of the facilities at the Hampton Inn! Now, let us make the most of our more spacious accommodations! We hope that the new dates are manageable for most who registered for the previous dates and invite others to take advantage of this second opportunity.
The newsletter deadline came up faster than our ability to finalize arrangements, but the proposed deadline for abstract submittal is 21 February and for early registration is 28 February. The website for both and for confirming continued participation by those who have already submitted and registered should be functional by the time you read this column, reached through the GERS home page.
